Northern Luzon giant cloud rat – Bu-ot
The northern Luzon giant cloud rat, also known as bu-ot in Filipino, is a large species of rodent with 28 to 30 inches in long including its tail and weighs about 1.9 to 2.6 kilogram. These timid, forest-dwelling rats have long, rough fur. Most of their coats are a combination of white to pale gray fur with dark brown or black markings on the face and body. They often have a black mask and collar, but can also be entirely white. They have small ears, long whiskers and a densely furred tail. Their large hind feet and long claws make them excellent climbers.
This species is endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines, where it is found in the northern and central provinces. Giant cloud rats are primarily tree-dwelling, spending most of their time high in the branches. They can sometimes be seen moving slowly along the forest floor searching for food. The oldest known cloud rat in human care lived to be 13 years old.
